Convert a Barclays bank statement PDF to Excel

Barclays statements list Money out and Money in in separate columns, with a running balance that goes negative when the account is overdrawn. StmtSnap reads both columns and the balance, and checks each row against the one before it.

Excel and CSV are free. QuickBooks QBO and the other accounting formats are on paid plans. Text PDFs are read in your browser.

Text PDFs are converted in this browser and never uploaded. Scanned PDFs are read by Google Gemini, and we ask first.

Before you convert: a text PDF stays on your device. If the PDF is a scan, we show a notice before any page is sent to Google Gemini, and scanned pages need a free account. Excel and CSV are free; Tally XML, QuickBooks QBO and Zoho CSV are on paid plans (pricing).

What a Barclays statement prints

  • Date
  • Description
  • Money out (£)
  • Money in (£)
  • Balance (£), negative when overdrawn
  • A start balance and an end balance for the period

The export keeps the transaction date, the full description and the amount split into debit and credit, plus the running balance. Value-date and cheque/reference columns are not exported in this version; a reference printed inside the narration stays in the description.

How StmtSnap reads this layout

  • Money out is read as a negative amount and Money in as positive. An overdrawn balance with a leading minus, or marked DR, is a negative balance.
  • The engine recognises opening rows worded Opening, Beginning or Brought Forward, and closing rows worded Closing, Ending or Carried Forward. If a statement words them differently, the running balance is still checked row to row, but the result is unverified rather than verified.
  • Year-less dates such as "3 Jun" take their year from the statement period line when one reads "… to …".
  • Rotated watermark text, such as a diagonal "copy" stamp, is ignored rather than read as a row.

Sample and balance check

A synthetic UK layout that goes overdrawn and prints a closing balance but no opening balance. The rows chain and the closing matches, yet the result is unverified: a dropped first row would not show. It is synthetic test data: no real bank, person or account, and the descriptions are random labels, so a payroll line can be a debit. The figures below are what the converter produced from it.

unverifiedUnverified: everything that could be checked matches, but the statement doesn't print enough to prove no row is missing.

How to get your Barclays statement PDF

  1. Log in to Barclays Online Banking or the Barclays app.
  2. Open the account and go to Statements.
  3. Download the statement PDF for the period.
  4. Open the PDF in StmtSnap, check the balance result, and download Excel or CSV.

Barclays offers its own downloads of recent transactions, which are cleaner than any PDF conversion. The PDF route is for older statements, statements a client sent you, or when you need the statement itself as the source of truth.

Why does an unverified result matter? A running balance proves that each row follows from the one before it. It cannot prove that nothing is missing before the first row. Only a printed opening balance can. If your statement shows unverified, glance at its first transaction before you rely on the file.

Questions

Does it handle an overdrawn Barclays account?
Yes. Negative balances are kept negative, and the row-to-row check runs through zero the same way.
What does unverified mean on my Barclays result?
The rows chain correctly and the end balance matches, but the statement printed no opening balance the engine recognised, so a missing first row could not be ruled out. Check the first transaction by eye.
Can I get a QIF or OFX file for Barclays?
The converter writes Excel, CSV, Tally XML, QuickBooks QBO and Zoho CSV, with plan details on the pricing page. There is no QIF export.
Is my statement uploaded?
A text PDF is read in your browser and is not uploaded. Scanned pages go to the scanned-page service only after you are asked, and need a free account.
Which other UK banks work?
Any bank whose statement is a text PDF with a column header naming a date column and at least one money column (Debit/Credit, Withdrawal/Deposit, a single Amount, or Balance). A scanned PDF has no text to read, so it goes through the scanned-page path instead: you see a notice first, and it needs a free account.
