Convert a Chase bank statement PDF to Excel

Chase lets you download recent account activity as a spreadsheet, but the monthly statements are PDFs. When you need last year's statements in Excel — for taxes, a loan file or catching up the books — StmtSnap reads the Chase PDF in your browser and gives you a spreadsheet with every transaction and a balance check.

Excel and CSV are free. QuickBooks QBO is on paid plans.

Text PDFs are converted in this browser and never uploaded. Scanned PDFs are read by Google Gemini, and we ask first.

Before you convert: a text PDF stays on your device. If the PDF is a scan, we show a notice before any page is sent to Google Gemini, and scanned pages need a free account. Excel and CSV are free; Tally XML, QuickBooks QBO and Zoho CSV are on paid plans (pricing).

What a Chase checking statement prints

  • A summary block: Beginning Balance, Deposits and Additions, Withdrawals, Ending Balance
  • Transaction detail: DATE (MM/DD, no year), DESCRIPTION, AMOUNT, BALANCE
  • Money out shown with a leading minus in the Amount column
  • Beginning and Ending Balance rows inside the transaction detail

The export keeps the transaction date, the full description and the amount split into debit and credit, plus the running balance. Value-date and cheque/reference columns are not exported in this version; a reference printed inside the narration stays in the description.

How StmtSnap reads this layout

  • Rows print MM/DD with no year. The year comes from the statement period line when it reads "… to …"; if no period line is found, the current year is used and the result says so (YEAR_INFERRED). Check the year on any statement that crosses December into January.
  • Dates are read month-first once any second field is over 12 (02/15). If every date could be read either way, the order that keeps the rows sorted wins; month-first is the fallback for US statements, with a DATE_FORMAT_ASSUMED warning.
  • A leading minus, a trailing minus or parentheses all mean money out. Dollar signs and thousands commas are stripped before the amount is read in cents.
  • Beginning Balance and Ending Balance rows are never exported as transactions; they are the printed values the conversion is checked against.

Sample and balance check

A synthetic Chase-like layout: year-less MM/DD rows, parentheses for money out, and no running-balance column, so the check is beginning balance plus every row against the ending balance. It is synthetic test data: no real bank, person or account, and the descriptions are random labels, so a payroll line can be a debit. The figures below are what the converter produced from it.

How to get your Chase statement PDF

  1. Sign in at chase.com and open the account.
  2. Go to Statements & documents and pick the month.
  3. Download the statement PDF (not a printed web page, which loses the table layout).
  4. Open the PDF in StmtSnap, check the balance result, and download Excel or CSV.

If the period you need is still in your online activity, Chase's own activity download is cleaner than any converter, because it never went through a PDF. The converter earns its place for closed months, for statements a client emailed you, and for when you need the statement's own ending balance as proof.

The spreadsheet has one Date column in real Excel dates, the full description, separate Debit and Credit columns derived from the sign, and the balance where the statement prints one. Text PDFs are read in your browser, so the statement is not uploaded to us.

Questions

Can I export a Chase PDF statement to Excel directly from Chase?
Chase offers a spreadsheet download of recent account activity, but statement PDFs themselves have no Excel export. For a closed month you need a converter.
Why does my Chase spreadsheet show the wrong year?
Chase rows print MM/DD only. The year comes from the statement period; if none is found the current year is used and the result is flagged. Fix the year column in one step if that happens on a December–January statement.
Is my Chase statement uploaded?
A text PDF is read in your browser and is not uploaded. A scanned PDF has no text, so its pages would have to be sent to the scanned-page service; you are asked first, and it needs a free account.
Can I get a QuickBooks file instead?
Yes. The QBO (Web Connect) file is on paid plans; see the QuickBooks page for import steps.
Does it work with Chase credit card statements?
Not in this version. Card statements use the opposite sign convention; they show as a mismatch rather than a quietly wrong file.
