Convert an HSBC UK bank statement PDF to Excel

HSBC UK statements print the date only on the first transaction of each day, list money in two columns — Paid out and Paid in — and carry the balance between pages with Balance Brought Forward and Balance Carried Forward rows. A converter that reads row by row leaves most rows without a date. StmtSnap fills each one from the row above.

Excel and CSV are free. QuickBooks QBO and the other accounting formats are on paid plans. Text PDFs are read in your browser.

Text PDFs are converted in this browser and never uploaded. Scanned PDFs are read by Google Gemini, and we ask first.

Before you convert: a text PDF stays on your device. If the PDF is a scan, we show a notice before any page is sent to Google Gemini, and scanned pages need a free account. Excel and CSV are free; Tally XML, QuickBooks QBO and Zoho CSV are on paid plans (pricing).

What an HSBC UK statement prints

  • Date (DD Mon YY), printed once per day
  • Payment type and details
  • Paid out
  • Paid in
  • Balance
  • BALANCE BROUGHT FORWARD and BALANCE CARRIED FORWARD rows

The export keeps the transaction date, the full description and the amount split into debit and credit, plus the running balance. Value-date and cheque/reference columns are not exported in this version; a reference printed inside the narration stays in the description.

How StmtSnap reads this layout

  • A row with an amount but a blank date takes the date of the row above, on the same page only, so a new page never inherits a stale date.
  • The first Brought Forward balance is the opening balance; the last Carried Forward balance is the closing balance. Neither is exported as a transaction.
  • Paid out is money out and Paid in is money in. £ signs and thousands commas are stripped before amounts are read in pence.
  • Day-first order is read from the month names, so there is no 03/04 ambiguity on this layout.

Sample and balance check

A synthetic HSBC-like layout: DD Mon YY dates printed once per day, Paid out / Paid in columns, and brought/carried forward rows across two pages. It is synthetic test data: no real bank, person or account, and the descriptions are random labels, so a payroll line can be a debit. The figures below are what the converter produced from it.

How to get your HSBC UK statement PDF

  1. Log on to HSBC UK online banking and open the account.
  2. Choose Statements and select the statement.
  3. Download it as a PDF.
  4. Open the PDF in StmtSnap, check the balance result, and download Excel or CSV.

UK dates are day-first. If you open a CSV in Excel on a computer set to US regional settings, Excel can silently swap day and month on dates like 03/04/2026. The CSV here writes ISO dates (2026-04-03), which Excel reads the same way on any setting; the .xlsx file stores real date values, so it has no such problem.

For Xero or FreeAgent users: the CSV is a plain Date / Description / Debit / Credit / Balance file. Map Debit and Credit once in the import screen and save the mapping.

Questions

Why do most rows on my HSBC statement have no date?
HSBC prints the date once per day. StmtSnap gives every row below it the same date, on the same page, so your spreadsheet has a date on every line.
Are Balance Brought Forward rows imported as transactions?
No. They become the opening and closing balances the conversion is checked against.
Will Excel mix up day and month?
Not with these files. The CSV uses ISO dates and the .xlsx file stores real dates, so a US-set Excel cannot swap them.
Is my statement uploaded?
A text PDF is read in your browser and is not uploaded. Scanned pages go to the scanned-page service only after you are asked, and need a free account.
Which other UK banks work?
Any bank whose statement is a text PDF with a column header naming a date column and at least one money column (Debit/Credit, Withdrawal/Deposit, a single Amount, or Balance). A scanned PDF has no text to read, so it goes through the scanned-page path instead: you see a notice first, and it needs a free account.
