Convert a CommBank statement PDF to Excel or CSV

Commonwealth Bank statements print the balance with a CR or DR marker instead of a minus sign, and Australian dates are day-first. A converter that ignores the marker gets an overdrawn balance wrong; one that assumes US dates swaps day and month. StmtSnap reads both, in your browser.

Excel and CSV are free. QuickBooks QBO and the other accounting formats are on paid plans.

Text PDFs are converted in this browser and never uploaded. Scanned PDFs are read by Google Gemini, and we ask first.

Before you convert: a text PDF stays on your device. If the PDF is a scan, we show a notice before any page is sent to Google Gemini, and scanned pages need a free account. Excel and CSV are free; Tally XML, QuickBooks QBO and Zoho CSV are on paid plans (pricing).

What a CommBank statement prints

  • Date (day-first)
  • Transaction details
  • Debit
  • Credit
  • Balance with CR (in credit) or DR (overdrawn)
  • Opening balance, closing balance and period totals

The export keeps the transaction date, the full description and the amount split into debit and credit, plus the running balance. Value-date and cheque/reference columns are not exported in this version; a reference printed inside the narration stays in the description.

How StmtSnap reads this layout

  • A balance ending in CR is positive and one ending in DR is negative. The marker is read from the balance cell itself.
  • The country is read from the statement: BSB, AUD, A$, EFTPOS, BPAY or Osko mark it as Australian, so dates default to day-first and the QBO file says AUD. A statement with none of those and only a $ sign is treated as US.
  • Day-first order is confirmed once any day is over 12. Year-less "DD Mon" rows that run from December into January take the period's end year for January, when the statement period is printed.
  • Printed total debits and total credits are compared with the sum of the rows, not just the closing balance.

Sample and balance check

A synthetic CBA-like layout: DD/MM/YYYY dates, balances marked CR, and printed totals for the period. It is synthetic test data: no real bank, person or account, and the descriptions are random labels, so a payroll line can be a debit. The figures below are what the converter produced from it.

How to get your CommBank statement PDF

  1. Log on to NetBank or open the CommBank app.
  2. Go to the account and open Statements.
  3. Download the statement as a PDF.
  4. Open the PDF in StmtSnap, check the balance result, and download Excel or CSV.

Commonwealth Bank lets you export recent transactions as CSV from NetBank. Use that when it covers your period. The PDF route is for statements older than the export window, statements a client emailed, or when you want the bank's printed totals checked against the rows.

For Xero users: the plain CSV here is Date / Description / Debit / Credit / Balance with ISO dates. Xero's statement import accepts it with a one-time column mapping.

Questions

Does it understand CR and DR on CommBank balances?
Yes. CR is in credit (positive) and DR is overdrawn (negative). The marker is read from each balance cell.
Will my dates come out American?
No, if the statement shows it is Australian (a BSB, AUD, A$, EFTPOS, BPAY or Osko on it), and in any case once any day is over 12. The files use ISO dates, so Excel cannot swap them.
Can it read a December to January statement?
Yes. Year-less rows after the period's start month keep the start year; January rows take the end year.
Is my statement uploaded?
A text PDF is read in your browser and is not uploaded. Scanned pages go to the scanned-page service only after you are asked, and need a free account.
Which other Australian banks work?
Any bank whose statement is a text PDF with a column header naming a date column and at least one money column (Debit/Credit, Withdrawal/Deposit, a single Amount, or Balance). A scanned PDF has no text to read, so it goes through the scanned-page path instead: you see a notice first, and it needs a free account.
