Convert an HDFC Bank statement PDF to Tally XML

HDFC NetBanking gives you a statement PDF with two-digit years, a dense narration column and a page total at the foot of each page. StmtSnap reads that layout, rejects the page totals, checks every row against the closing balance and writes Tally Payment and Receipt vouchers.

Text PDFs are read in your browser and are not uploaded. Tally XML is on paid plans; Excel and CSV of the same statement are free.

Text PDFs are converted in this browser and never uploaded. Scanned PDFs are read by Google Gemini, and we ask first.

Before you convert: a text PDF stays on your device. If the PDF is a scan, we show a notice before any page is sent to Google Gemini, and scanned pages need a free account. Excel and CSV are free; Tally XML, QuickBooks QBO and Zoho CSV are on paid plans (pricing).

Columns on a typical HDFC Bank statement

  • Date (DD/MM/YY)
  • Narration (UPI / NEFT / IMPS / cheque detail)
  • Chq./Ref.No.
  • Value Dt
  • Withdrawal Amt.
  • Deposit Amt.
  • Closing Balance

The export keeps the transaction date, the full description and the amount split into debit and credit, plus the running balance. Value-date and cheque/reference columns are not exported in this version; a reference printed inside the narration stays in the description.

How StmtSnap reads this layout

  • Two-digit years (05/03/26) are read as 20YY, and the day-first order is settled once for the whole statement, not row by row.
  • HDFC prints "Deposit Amt." and "Closing Balance" so close together that a PDF reader can return them as one run of text. The engine splits that header back into two columns.
  • Page Total rows are ignored. A printed transaction count, when present, is compared with the rows read.
  • Two identical transactions on the same day (same narration, same amount) are both kept. Nothing is de-duplicated away.

Sample and balance check

A synthetic HDFC-style statement: two-digit years, a Page Total row on each page, a printed transaction count, and two byte-identical legitimate rows. It is synthetic test data: no real bank, person or account, and the descriptions are random labels, so a payroll line can be a debit. The figures below are what the converter produced from it.

From the HDFC PDF to Tally vouchers

  1. In HDFC NetBanking go to Accounts → Account Statement, pick the period and download the PDF.
  2. Open it in StmtSnap and type the PDF password if the file has one.
  3. Check the balance result, then download the _tally.xml file.
  4. Create or rename the bank and fallback ledgers so the names in the file exist in your company.
  5. Import from Gateway of Tally → Import → Transactions.

HDFC narrations often carry the payee, UPI handle and reference in one long string that wraps across lines. The lines are joined back into a single narration before the voucher is written, so the text you search later in Tally is complete up to Tally's 200-character narration cut.

Questions

Does HDFC's own Tally integration replace this?
Ask HDFC whether its Tally connectivity covers your account type. If you are a CA working from a client's emailed PDF, or a period already closed, converting the PDF is the practical route.
Are the page totals on HDFC statements imported as vouchers?
No. Page Total and Sub Total rows are recognised and skipped.
Is the HDFC to Tally export free?
Tally XML is on the Starter, Pro and Enterprise plans. Excel and CSV are free.
Does it handle password-protected HDFC PDFs?
Yes. Type the PDF password when asked. The file is unlocked in your browser; neither the PDF nor the password is uploaded.
What if the conversion shows a mismatch?
Every conversion is checked before you download: the running balance row by row, and the opening and closing balances where the statement prints them. A HDFC statement that did not read cleanly shows as a mismatch instead of a tidy but wrong file. If that happens, email us the layout with the numbers blanked out.
