Convert an SBI statement PDF to Tally XML

TallyPrime can import an SBI statement on its own, but only from Excel, CSV or MT940, never from the PDF that OnlineSBI or YONO hands you. StmtSnap fills that gap: it reads the SBI PDF, checks the balances, and writes Tally voucher XML you import in one step.

A text PDF is read in your browser, so the statement is not uploaded. The Tally file is on paid plans; Excel and CSV of the same statement are free.

Text PDFs are converted in this browser and never uploaded. Scanned PDFs are read by Google Gemini, and we ask first.

Before you convert: a text PDF stays on your device. If the PDF is a scan, we show a notice before any page is sent to Google Gemini, and scanned pages need a free account. Excel and CSV are free; Tally XML, QuickBooks QBO and Zoho CSV are on paid plans (pricing).

Columns on a typical SBI account statement

  • Txn Date
  • Value Date
  • Description (UPI / NEFT / ATM / cheque detail)
  • Ref No. / Cheque No.
  • Debit
  • Credit
  • Balance

The export keeps the transaction date, the full description and the amount split into debit and credit, plus the running balance. Value-date and cheque/reference columns are not exported in this version; a reference printed inside the narration stays in the description.

How StmtSnap reads this layout

  • Separate Debit and Credit columns give the sign directly: an amount under Debit becomes a Payment voucher, under Credit a Receipt voucher.
  • The column header is found again on every page, so a statement whose header repeats on page 2 keeps its columns aligned.
  • A statement-level Total row is not a transaction; its debit and credit figures become the printed totals the conversion is checked against.
  • Dates such as 05/01/2026 are read day-first once any day in the statement is over 12. If every date could be read either way, the order that keeps the rows in date order wins.
  • Balances in lakh grouping (12,34,567.89) are read as written; money is kept in paise, never as floating point.

Sample and balance check

A synthetic two-amount-column statement in the SBI style, two pages, with a repeated header and a Total row. It is synthetic test data: no real bank, person or account, and the descriptions are random labels, so a payroll line can be a debit. The figures below are what the converter produced from it.

From the SBI PDF to Tally vouchers

  1. Download the account statement PDF from OnlineSBI or YONO for the period you need.
  2. Open it in StmtSnap. If the PDF is password-protected, type the password; it is unlocked in your browser.
  3. Check the balance result shown under the table before you download.
  4. Download the _tally.xml file and make sure the bank and fallback ledgers it names exist in your company.
  5. In TallyPrime: Gateway of Tally → Import → Transactions, then pick the file.

Why not use TallyPrime's own bank statement import? Its list covers 138 Indian banks, SBI included, but it reads Excel, CSV, MT940 or delimited files only. If all you have is a PDF — an old period, a client's emailed statement, a YONO download — you still need a converter in between.

Every voucher's other side goes to the fallback ledger ("Suspense Account" by default) unless a keyword rule maps it, so reconcile Suspense before you close the month.

Questions

Can TallyPrime import an SBI PDF directly?
No. TallyPrime's bank statement import reads Excel, CSV, MT940 or delimited files, not PDF. StmtSnap converts the PDF into voucher XML that Tally imports.
Does it read statements from both OnlineSBI and YONO?
The converter locates the column header in whatever PDF you open, so it does not depend on which channel produced it. Check the balance result on your first statement either way.
Is the SBI to Tally export free?
Tally XML is on the Starter, Pro and Enterprise plans. Excel and CSV of the same statement are free.
Does it handle password-protected SBI PDFs?
Yes. Type the PDF password when asked. The file is unlocked in your browser; neither the PDF nor the password is uploaded.
What if the conversion shows a mismatch?
Every conversion is checked before you download: the running balance row by row, and the opening and closing balances where the statement prints them. A SBI statement that did not read cleanly shows as a mismatch instead of a tidy but wrong file. If that happens, email us the layout with the numbers blanked out.
